When Jeffrey Lurie purchased the Philadelphia Eagles in 1994, he immediately made a commitment to build a new, state-of-the-art stadium that would be a key component in building Eagles into an elite NFL franchise.

The construction of Lincoln Financial Field began on May 7, 2001. On August 3, 2003, less than 28 months after groundbreaking, the stadium hosted its first event, a world soccer match between Manchester United and FC Barcelona. Five days later, another blockbuster, three Bruce Springsteen concerts, opened to sell-out crowds.

The “Inaugural Game” at Lincoln Financial Field, on Monday, September 8, 2003, featured the Philadelphia Eagles and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The passion of Philadelphia fans flooded every class, ethnicity and age group. The world saw that Philadelphia was now home to a world-class stadium.

Lincoln Financial Field was designed by architects NBBJ Sport. Clad in rich brick, expansive glass facades and a dynamic steel structure, its purpose is to bring the fans closer to the playing field. The new stadium offers dramatically improved sightlines, as well as state-of-the-art amenities and services. NBBJ's unique concept for the architecture broke from the traditional bowl design in that nearly two-thirds of the 68,000 seats are located on the sidelines, 60 feet from the field. Two three- tier grandstand seating areas are located on both sides of the gridiron; two-tier seating sections are located beyond the end zones.

The stadium also features two open-air plaza corners for city skyline views and the exterior has a pair of eagle wing-like coverings over the upper deck. These wings form some protection from the elements and serve to focus stadium noise back toward the field, all aimed to enhance the game experience. Two video boards, 27 by 96 feet, are located between the lower and upper decks in each end zone.

Amenities available at Lincoln Financial Field include 172 luxury suites; 10,828 club seats; two club lounges (each 40,000 square feet) located on the east and west sides of the stadium; a 110,000 square feet fan plaza; and an exclusive Philadelphia Eagles team store.
